SAVE OUR FOOTHILLS

Petition to Salt Lake City Council and Mayor

The Salt Lake City Foothills Trails System Plan and its implementation are deeply flawed. Focusing only on trail construction, the Plan ignores key values identified by the planners themselves, scientific experts and concerned citizens. To date Phase 1 has destabilized slopes, destroyed fragile habitat, spread invasive weeds, disregarded Indigenous sites, scarred pristine vistas and hindered foothills users — hikers, bikers and runners alike.

Whereas, Salt Lake City has a unique natural resource in the Foothills abutting our urban areas; and

Whereas, Salt Lake City residents value trails providing access to our Foothills and the protection of native plants, animal habitat and watershed; preserving roadless and wilderness quality areas; maintaining safety; and respecting Indigenous and historic lands; and

Whereas, the design and implementation of the current Salt Lake City Foothills Trails System Plan does not reflect these important values;

We, the residents and users of the Foothills, urge the Salt Lake City Council and Mayor to:

  • Develop a foothills environmental protection plan to identify roadless area to be safeguarded, geological hazards, fragile riparian areas, and Indigenous sacred and historic sites;

  • Greatly expand public outreach to solicit input from all user groups;

  • Complete critical scientific and user group studies before undertaking further planning or construction of trails;

  • Appoint an independent oversight committee tasked to monitor the entire planning and implementation processes.

 Protect our SLC Foothills for generations to come!
